What’s so special?

Wittnauer was founded in New Rochelle, New York in 1885 by Albert Wittnauer, a Swiss immigrant who set out to bring quality Swiss-made watches to America at accessible prices. The company built a reputation for reliability among navigators, aviators, and explorers, and its watches were carried on early expeditions and military campaigns. During the WWII era, Wittnauer’s 24-hour dial format became popular with pilots and navigators who needed to track time unambiguously across a full day without confusing AM and PM.

This piece features a 24-hour dial layout. Bold Arabic numerals mark the hours 1 through 12 on the outer track, with a corresponding 13 through 24 printed on the inner track, a format prized by collectors of military and field watches. The case back is signed Wittnauer Watch, Swiss, Stainless Steel, and the dial is signed Wittnauer, Swiss. This example features Wittnauer’s venerated 10T 15 jewel movement.
