What’s so special?
This is a Croton Nivada Grenchen Chronograph Aviator Sea Diver, a multifunction tool watch that emerged in the 1960s during the golden age of professional chronographs. Nivada Grenchen, a Swiss brand founded in 1926, became well known for its rugged and versatile watches designed for pilots, divers, and adventurers. In the United States, Nivada’s watches were often co-branded with Croton due to trademark conflicts, which is why this piece bears both names on its dial.
The watch features a stainless steel case with pump pushers and a rotating black bezel marked in 60-minute increments, useful for timing dives or other intervals. Its chronograph complication includes two sub-dials: a 30-minute counter and running seconds, along with a central chronograph hand for elapsed seconds. Around the dial, a tachymeter scale provides additional functionality for calculating speed over distance, making this watch a robust professional instrument. The broad arrow hand and bold red date indicator add legibility and visual character, while the bezel’s strong triangle marker underscores its dive-ready design.
About this example
This example shows a well-preserved black dial with luminous triangular and baton markers, aged hands that have developed a warm patina, and a striking red minutes register that adds a pop of color. The bezel shows some signs of wear consistent with its age, but the printing remains sharp and legible. It is paired with a modern brown leather strap with red stitching at the lugs, giving it a rugged, vintage character. This example also features the Venus Cal. 188 movement, noting it as an earlier example prior to the Valjoux 7733 commonly found in other examples and features better movement finishing. The crown is replacement but all other parts appear authentic to this reference. This example was serviced by us about 1 year ago, the hand lume was preserved and stabilized, and will come with a certificate of service and observed time keeping.
